Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the wall attendant will safely and professionally facilitate patron usage of the climbing wall, boulder, wall classes, and route setting.

  • Check the wall, boulder, floor, equipment per the safety checklist prior to each climbing session.
  • Remove any equipment deemed unsafe and report it to supervisor.
  • Give age appropriate safety orientation.
  • Instruct all participants in the proper use of climbing harness, helmet, and shoes.
  • Enforce student recreation center safety policy at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of participation for each session and activity through fusion.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures in the climbing wall manual.
  • Responsible for preparing accident, missing item and incident reports as required, and contacting appropriate University personnel in case of emergencies within the necessary time frame.
  • Must maintain strict adherence to safety procedures and attend safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Monitor climbing wall and related activities.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Inform members of outdoor adventure programs and services.
  • Prep fundamental 101 class equipment and class space.
  • Check in class participants.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge in proper belay standards.
  • Able to communicate and teach buddy check, belay commands, knot craft, belay techniques, belay motions, and do’s and do not’s.
  • Conduct a high level belay test ensuring thorough knowledge of belay process.
  • Record and log test results into fusion software program.
  • Assist the Coordinator with preforming and logging monthly and quarterly safety inspections.
  • Proficiency in belaying, tying in with a figure 8 knot, and movement on a climbing wall.
  • Properly clean and store setting equipment and climbing holds.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Education:            

  • Must be an enrolled student in or accepted to California State University Fullerton.

Experience:

  • Indoor climbing experience required.
  • Must have been employed as a Rockwall Attendant I and displayed a high level of competency of the positon’s job duties.

  • Must possess outstanding customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict safety standards, procedures, and proper technique to reduce risk.
  • Must be able to work well with faculty, staff, students, and general public.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community.
  • Must be able to be on time, prepared for work, and adhere to department dress code.
  • Must be comfortable working safely from height on a fixed line.
  • Must be able to learn knot craft and demonstrate rock wall skills with proficiency.
  • Must be able to communicate at a high level on detailed climbing processes and safety standards.
  • Must be able to demonstrate leadership skills when working with peers.
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct.
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively under general supervision.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and written.

  • Patience, concentration, and understanding for long periods of time.

Typical Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs properly.
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, listen and walk; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; clear verbal communication.
  • Must be physically able to work indoors and outdoors for a minimum of 3 ½ hours and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb in harness and assist adults and children in harness.
  • Must be able to work safely from height on a fixed line
  • Ability to set up and take down safety line.
  • Ability to safely ascend and descend safety line with setting equipment.

Special Requirements

  • Required to be limited mandated reporter.
  • First Aid, AED, and CPR certification required within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • May be required to work evenings, nights and weekends as needed.
