Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and organizes personal class teaching outlines, methods and goals that support the general teaching outlines provided by the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.
  • Ability to adapt your teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants.
  • Organizes and directs activities of assigned students in order to provide a high level of quality instruction for all students.
  • Ensures that all class students are registered and on the class roster prior to beginning class.
  • Resolves simple public complaints in matters related to swimming instruction and refers other complaints to the supervisor.
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all time, and maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals using the facilities.
  • Completes and submits records and documentation of completed lessons to the Aquatics supervisor and the American Red Cross office.1
  • Works with the Aquatics supervisor on an on-going basis to upgrade, improve and refine individual teaching skills related to teaching effective swimming lessons to various age groups and various skill levels.
  • Adhere to and assist in the enforcement of the policies and procedures of the University, the Associated Students, CSUF, Inc., and Titan Recreation
  • Must attend required Student Recreation Center and ASI employee orientation and trainings as  well as department specific trainings and meetings

Education, Work Experience Requirements and Abilities:

Education:

  • High School or equivalent complete. CSUF student preferred but not required for summer positions. 

Experience:

  • No experience is required but a background in aquatics is preferred.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must possess proficient communication skills
  • Must be able to pass the prerequisites required to participate in an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course
  • Must have or successfully obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding before employment.
  • Must have or successfully obtain an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
    before employment.
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using - front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object and remove it from the pool within 1 minute, 30 seconds
  • Must obtain a First Aid for Public Safety Personnel Certification that satisfies the requirements
    for Public Safety Personnel as defined in C.C.R. Title 22 within one (1) year of employment”

Additional Requirements:

Typical Mental Requirements:
Speaking, demonstrating and providing feedback to children and adults. Observing safety standards for pool both in water and on deck. Responding to customer concerns.

Typical Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions
  • Must be able to swim and demonstrate swimming proficiency.
  • Must be able to climb out of a pool without using a ladder and extricate a person with assistance.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs properly.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal state and local.
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, listen, walk; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; clear verbal communication.

Must maintain the ability to pass the prerequisites to the American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding Course

Special Requirements

  • Required to be a Mandatory Reporter and sign ASI Limited Mandatory Reporter Form.
  • Upon hire employment history and criminal background investigation will be completed

 Schedule

M-Thu 1:45-8:00pm. Weekends off 

June 20th-August 17th. 4th of july week off.

 Training June 12th-16th Must be available
