The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for preparing, performing and leading safe, enjoyable and effective group exercise classes within the Titan Student Recreation Center (SRC).  Classes are composed of students, faculty and staff of California State University Fullerton (CSUF) and CSUF auxiliary organizations on the CSUF campus.  The instructor will serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness and wellness, and is responsible for ensuring the uncompromised safety of all class members, regardless of the members’ fitness level(s) and/or experience.  This position will receive direction, guidance and class assignments as appropriate by the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator of Titan Student Recreation Center (SRC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead fitness classes by demonstrating each exercise, performing the workout/routine along with the participants, incorporating use of cueing, tempo, safe transitional movements from one exercise to another, and any necessary modifications for participants.
  • Instruct group exercise format according to class schedule and adhere to company standards.
  • Properly prepare for each class by choosing appropriate and relevant music (sound system will be provided), rehearsing the workout template, and preparing the studio layout prior to teaching each class.
  • Conduct necessary prep, set-up and post class duties
  • Engage all participants in group fitness classes in a safe, fun, and progressive manner.
  • Maintain productive, professional, and collaborative relationships with fellow instructors and co-workers.
  • Educate participants on proper form, anatomy, and modification of movements when needed.
  • Explain and enforce safety rules and proper usage of exercise equipment used during class.
  • Monitor any equipment use and ensure equipment/supplies are returned at end of class.
  • Maintain accurate records of class attendance.
  • Classes offered: Zumba, Yoga, Spin/Cycle, Barre, Guts, Butts & Thighs, variety of dance and martial arts

Education, Work Experience Requirements and Abilities:

Education:

  • Kinesiology major or degrees preferred.

Experience:

  • Previous fitness/exercise teaching experience is preferred.
  • Current nationally accredited group fitness certification (AFAA, NSCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM, or other certifications recognized by Titan Recreation)

Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and principles and general understanding of human anatomy and kinesiology.
  • Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies, the incorporation of music, tempo, cuing technique, and rhythm.
  • Ability to sufficiently demonstrate and articulate all actions, maneuvers and postures for each class with sufficient skill and/or mastery for the duration of the class(es).
  • Must be able to keep an accurate record of hours worked by clocking in and out correctly.
  • Must be able to be on time, prepared to work and adhere to department dress code.
  • Know, apply, and enforce rules for assigned exercise/activity.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Displays a positive attitude with customers, coworkers and toward work.
  • Demonstrates the ability to help others adapt to new situations.
  • Must be able to accept instruction/constructive criticism from supervisor.

Additional Requirements: 

Typical Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to properly lift and maneuver equipment as is appropriate for each class.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, listen and walk; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination required; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; clear verbal communication.

Special Requirements

Must obtain First Aid/CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of employment.
